Twin Sister – “Gene Ciampi”

Twin Sister
I’ve already participated in year-end roundups for Exclaim! and BeatRoute, but my most extensive year-end list appears in this week’s issue of the Georgia Straight.

It includes Twin Sister’s excellent debut LP In Heaven, which has been burrowing its way into my brain ever since it was released back in September. Here’s the peculiar standout “Gene Ciampi.” Who is this Gene fellow, and why does his song sound so weird?

I want it bad

Go 'Nucks!
Tonight, the Vancouver Canucks have a chance to win the Stanley Cup. I’m a bandwagon hockey fan at best, but as a lifelong Vancouverite, I’m still pretty excited.

On a completely unrelated note, here’s the new single from Twin Sister, a band that totally kills live. Entitled “Bad Street,” it’s a vaguely funky and catchy slice of dance pop. Go to Exclaim! to read my article about the band’s upcoming album (and see this one about the band’s EP reissue).

Filling up your heart with hiss

The flower children of Twin Sister
Over the past couple of weeks, my web designer Mike Withers and I have been watching Twin Peaks. One of my favourite things about the show is its score, with its sweeping textures and massive, pillowy synth chords. So I was intrigued when I picked up Twin Sister‘s EP Color Your Life and noticed that the sticker on the front described it as having “Twin Peaks soundscapes.”

The EP’s standout is “All Around and Away We Go,” an infectious disco strut with soft-focus synths and gently cooing vocal hooks. If the Bee Gees were to draw inspiration from a supernatural murder mystery set in a small town in the Pacific Northwest, it might sound something like this.
