I don’t know about anything

With a bonus photo-only member
In addition to being a co-frontman of Sun Wizard, songwriter Malcolm Jack plays in a band called Capitol 6. Unlike his other outfit’s raw and upbeat take on classic guitar rock, this band favours heady, reverb-hazed psychedelia. I wrote about Capitol 6’s Captain Rehab 10″ EP for Exclaim! a while back, and you can hear the enticingly woozy cut “I Sure Can Pretend” below.

The band also has a new 7″ out in August. If you’re doing the math, that’s 17″ of wax available through Light Organ. Check out both releases over at Bandcamp. Vancouverites can catch the band live on August 17 at the Biltmore.

I just can’t seem to get you off my mind

And now I'm hungry
In the past week, I’ve written about Vancouver’s Sun Wizard a couple of times. I interviewed the band members for Exclaim!, and wrote a piece about the new album Positively 4th Avenue for The Tyee.

Here’s another track from that LP, which is out now on Light Organ. It’s called “Golden Girl” and it’s another back-to-basics, ’70s-infused rocker. This is what this band does.

It’s only natural to feel this way

They're the Wiz and nobody beats them
Late last year, I interviewed Vancouver music industry veteran Jonathan Simkin for Exclaim!, and we spoke about his new label, Light Organ. One of the signings he was most excited about was Sun Wizard. Now, the band is getting set to unveil its debut LP, Positively 4th Avenue, on March 29. It’s a bit of a strange title, since 4th Avenue in Vancouver isn’t exactly the most rock ‘n’ roll place.

Here’s the first single, “World’s Got a Handle.” It’s a little grittier than what I’ve heard from the band before, although it has a similar heartland rock vibe. Fans of Tom Petty will love this drawling rocker, with its nimble guitar licks and rich vocal harmonies.

If you feel a little weirder than you oughta

The band decided to line up in order of hairiness
Sun Wizard frontman Malcolm Jack has a quintessential rock ‘n’ roll voice, combining the sneering disaffection of Julian Casablancas with the drawl of Tom Petty. It’s fitting, then, that the Vancouver four-piece is a quintessential rock ‘n’ roll band, offering ’70s-infused guitar jams and summery Laurel Canyon vocal harmonies. Check out “Glorious,” the first track off the group’s recently-released EP, Maybe They Were Right. An anti-urban anthem, it’s a sunny rocker that makes me want to crank up the car stereo and drive around with the windows down. First I’ll need a car, however. And a driver’s license.
