How did I love Red Hot Chili Peppers as a teenager? Let me count the ways:

-I bleached my hair to look like Californication-era Anthony Kiedis.
-My longtime email address, alecks8981@hotmail.com, was a reference to my member number in their fan club.
-I bought all of their CD singles in order to own the B-sides.
-I convinced my dad to take me to Seattle to watch them play for my birthday.

A couple of weeks ago, I reviewed their latest Vancouver show for the Georgia Straight. Somewhere deep inside of me, my high school self went ape-shit. Below is the video for “Look Around,” which is one of the better songs from last year’s I’m with You.

We’ve got to make it rain somehow

By sticking up for Red Hot Chili Peppers, I feel a bit like one of those bloggers who still claims that Incubus is good. But really, when I was in high school, this band was life-changing. My life can be neatly divided into pre-Californication and post-Californication eras. It’s hard to convey just how much the Chili Peppers meant to me back when I was fifteen.

But, y’know, times change. I reviewed the newly-released I’m with You for Exclaim! and, well, you can go there to read my somewhat mixed response. But still, I have a lot of fondness for the band, which I hope comes across in the massive Timeline I wrote.

Below is the single “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie,” which is probably the closest the new album comes to matching the ultra-catchy hooks of the band’s best work.
