Monomyth – “Don’t Stare”

Monomyth
I’m a huge fan of Monomyth’s self-titled tape, and here’s another of the EP’s standouts. “Don’t Stare” is a slow-builder that begins with unaccompanied guitar strumming; the vocals don’t enter until the 34-second mark, and this low-key atmosphere persists until around two minutes in, when the song suddenly explodes into its cinematic earworm of a refrain. This chorus returns a couple more times, making this a very well-spent six minutes.

Monomyth – “Feeling”

Monomyth
Yesterday, when writing a Dog Day tour story Exclaim!, I developed a fondness for the band’s touring partner, Monomyth. The Halifax band’s self-titled EP is wonderfully shit-smeared slice of sonic sunshine. “Feeling” is hardly the first song from the last few years to pilfer the Beach Boys‘ California pop style and rework it as grimy garage rock, but that doesn’t make it any less effective.
