Cloud Nothings – “No Future/No Past”

Cloud Nothings‘ self-titled album was one of my favourites of 2011, but the recent Attack on Memory? I’m still not quite sure. It sounds huge, and there are still a few catchy moments that make it worth the price of admission, but, as I wrote about for The Tyee, I’m not quite sure I buy songwriter Dylan Baldi as a mopey grunger.

Below is the video for “No Future/No Past.” Bummer, man.

Cloud Nothings – “Stay Useless”

Cloud Nothings‘ self-titled album is one of my favourites of 2011, and so naturally I’m pretty excited to hear the Steve Albini-produced followup, Attack on Memory.

Here’s the raw and rocking “Stay Useless,” which sounds a bit like something that could have appeared on Cloud Nothings, although this time his ’90s-tinged pop punk style sounds a bit more Lollapalooza than Warped Tour.

Cloud Nothings – “Should Have”

It’s that time of year again: I’ve begun compiling best-of-2011 lists for some of the publications I write for. One album that’s been ranking near the top of my lists is Cloud Nothings‘ self-titled LP, a record I didn’t even bother to blog about when it came out back in January.

Okay, so I’ve been a little slow on the uptake, but I’ve finally been won over by songwriter Dylan Baldi’s ecstatic slab of giddy pop punk. Here’s the album stand-out “Should Have,” which somehow makes me nostalgic about turn-of-the-millennium-era blink-182, even though I never really cared for that band at the time.

I’m sorry we can’t be friends

No matter how many fuzzy lo-fi pop acts I write about, there’s always more. Here’s Cloud Nothings, a band led by Cleveland songwriter Dylan Baldi. While many of the other bands in the same vein favour chirpy bubblegum pop or retro garage rock, “Even if It Worked Out” has got more of a ’90s alt-rock vibe, especially during the chorus.
