Little Girls – “White Night”

Little Girls
Here’s another track from Little Girls‘ recent EP Cults. It’s a video for the opening cut “White Night,” which, in typical Little Girls fashion, is a hard-hitting fuzz rocker with ultra lo-fi production values and a creepy-as-fuck new wave vibe.

The accompanying video, also in typical Little Girls fashion, includes lots of flickering images and creepy, VHS-looking static. Unlike past clips, however, this actually features the band members. As far as I remember, this is the first time songwriter Josh McIntyre has actually appeared in one of his own videos.

Coldplay – “Paradise”

Coldplay
Like many people who were in high school in the early naughts, I fondly recall Coldplay’s first two albums, Parachutes (2000) and A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002). The group has found a massive market in people who want solid pop songs but can’t be bothered to seek out anything other than what’s on the radio. Hey, you could do worse.

The latest album from Mr. Gwyneth Paltrow’s band of merry men is called Mylo Xyloto. Go to the Georgia Straight to read my review and, below, watch an elephant go on a life quest in the video for “Paradise.”

Silver Dapple – “(Pauses)”

Silver Dapple
Silver Dapple’s new LP English Girlfriend has quickly become one of my favourite albums of 2011. It’s full of noisy fuzz-soaked ragers, but unlike so many other contemporary shoegaze bands, this Montreal outfit gets by on pure muscle.

Below, watch the video for “(Pauses),” a raucous cut with raw, echo-laden vocals that sound like they were recorded through a cranked-up guitar amp. Go to Exclaim! to stream the whole album and read my words about it.

CONTEST: Arkells – “Kiss Cam”

Arkells
As I wrote about yesterday in an Exclaim! news story, Arkells are on tour in support of their recent album Michigan Left. The band will be coming to Vancouver on November 11 for a show at the Commodore Ballroom.

Watch the video for the single “Kiss Cam” below. The song is a swinging, soul-tinged rocker that laments a breakup and longs for the days of kissing in the bleachers with a stadium full of people watching. As for the video, it features a lot of slow motion shots and a distinct lack of making out.

On that note, it’s contest time! I have three prizes to give away courtesy of Universal Music Canada. The grand prize is a signed seven-inch vinyl single (containing the songs “Kiss Cam” and “Whistleblower”) plus a poster and a CD. Two runners up will get a copy of Michigan Left on CD.

To enter the contest, just retweet the post right here. Three winners will be chosen at random. The contest is open from now until Friday afternoon (November 11) at 2 PM PST.

Yukon Blonde – “Water”

Yukon Blonde
Moving is the worst, but for some reason I have decided to do it five times in the last two years. Oh well.

This ought to ease the stress of yet another move. It’s the harmony-laden rocker “Water” by Yukon Blonde, the second sort-of title track from the new Fire//Water EP. Watch the video below, and don’t be surprised if you start feeling slightly thirsty. I interviewed the band for Exclaim! and reviewed the EP for the Georgia Straight.

Kathryn Calder – “Who Are You?”

Kathryn Calder
Former Immaculate Machine member and current New Pornographers contributor Kathryn Calder just released her sophomore solo album, Bright and Vivid, through File Under: Music. I interviewed her for Exclaim! and wrote about the LP for The Tyee.

Below, watch the video for the dance floor-friendly single “Who Are You?,” which expands Calder’s usual sonic pallet with hooky synths and thudding electro beats. This one takes her out of the coffee shop and into the nightclub.

Neon Indian – “Polish Girl”

Neon Indian
What the fuck? How did I manage to completely ignore the new Neon Indian record, Era Extraña? I wrote an announcement for Exclaim! back in the summer, but I never actually listened to it when it came out back in September.

Well, in the last week or two I’ve gotten hooked. Here’s the video for the outstanding single “Polish Girl.” Forgot about chillwave, since this is pure synthpop magic.

PREMIERE + CONTEST: Elliott Brood – “If I Get Old”

Elliott BROOD
For the second time, I’m pleased to offer an exclusive performance video. This time it’s from Toronto roots rock outfit Elliott BROOD. The band recently released its third full-length album, Days into Years, via Paper Bag Records. The label filmed the band performing a number of cuts from the disc including this one, “If I Get Old.” Click below to see the trio mourn the passing of time with some help from a guitar, banjo, harmonica, and pattering drums.

Courtesy of Paper Bag Records, I’m also also hosting a contest. I’ll be giving away five copies of the 7″ single Northern Companion, which includes the cuts “Northern Air” and “The Banjo Song.” To enter the contest, just email me at alex@chippedhip.com and include the subject line “Elliott BROOD contest.” The first five entries get the goods.

UPDATE: They’re all gone. Thanks to those who entered!

Youth Lagoon – “Montana”

Youth Lagoon
Here’s the latest bedroom artist who specializes in dreamy pop tunes that are steeped in reverb and sepia-toned nostalgia. Youth Lagoon is the moniker of songwriter Trevor Powers, and his The Year of Hibernation recently came out through Fat Possum. Head to Exclaim! to read the tour announcement I wrote about the dude.

Here’s his single “Montana.” Okay, so I’m not so sure about this music video, but it’s hard to deny the song, which swells from a haunting piano lament to a majestic anthem that’s tailor made for a slow motion montage. This is the kind of music that could make waiting at the Burger King drive through seem profound.

Incidentally, we’ve already got the beginnings of a pretty good “Montana” playlist going here.

Lou Canon – “Heart Of”

Lou Canon
As a qualified (but non-practicing) teacher, I always get a kick out of educators who have ventured into the world of music. Enter Lou Canon, a Toronto songwriter who just so happens to be a teacher. She released her Hayden-produced self-titled LP back in the spring via Hardwood. Go to Exclaim! article to read about it, and also see my announcement about her upcoming tour. Vancouverites will want to note that she’s playing at Zulu Records on October 20.

Below, you can see a video for the single “Heart Of,” which is anchored by chugging electric guitar and given a dose of beauty by sustained piano chords and light, breathy vocals.
