Chipped Hip 2012 Playlist

Chipped Hip 2012 Playlist
As usual, I’m going to sum up the year with a non-definitive playlist of some of my favourite songs from 2012. These are roughly in chronological order according to when I first fell in love with them. Hmm, I certainly listened to a lot of guitar music, didn’t I?

I contributed to year-end retrospectives from the Georgia Straight, Exclaim!, BeatRoute and The Tyee, so follow those links for more formal lists and explanations.

Thanks to Mike Withers for the great artwork.

1. Said the Whale – “Loveless”

2. Weed – “Ben’s Tour”

3. Apollo Ghosts – “Guitar Brother”

4. Japandroids – “The House That Heaven Built”

5. Jack White – “Freedom at 21″

6. DIIV – “Doused”

7. Monomyth – “Feeling”

8. Maroon 5 ft. Wiz Khalifa – “Payphone”

9. A.C. Newman – “I’m Not Talking”

10. Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti – “Only in My Dreams”

Humans – “Possession”

Humans
I interviewed Vancouver electro duo Humans for this week’s issue of the Georgia Straight, and previous to that wrote a brief Exclaim! piece (which isn’t an interview). The clip for “Possession” is below.

Slim Fathers – “Everything That’s My Stuff”

Slim Fathers
Slim Fathers‘ lineup features Courtney Ewan from Twin River and Chris van der Laan from Wars, but the band’s noisy indie rock style sounds nothing like either of those projects.

This summer’s Old Fruit is a fantastic record, so get a load of the fiery “Everything That’s My Stuff” below.

I raved about the album for BeatRoute’s list of the best Vancouver releases of 2012.

Kendrick Lamar – “Backseat Freestyle”

Kendrick Lamar
My initial attempts to get into Kendrick Lamar were unsuccessful, but I’m officially converted, and good kid, m.A.A.d. city is excellent.

Below is “Backseat Freestyle,” which contains one of year’s most hilarious and crudely sexual rhymes of the year: “I pray my dick get big as the Eiffel Tower / So I can fuck the world for 72 hours.”

Mount Eerie – “Ocean Roar”

Mount Eerie
I ranked my favourite albums of the year for this week’s Georgia Straight. The star of the list was Mount Eerie, since Clear Moon and Ocean Roar are my two favourite albums of the year.

Here’s a video for latter’s title track. Sublime.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – “Look Around”

Red Hot Chili Peppers
How did I love Red Hot Chili Peppers as a teenager? Let me count the ways:

-I bleached my hair to look like Californication-era Anthony Kiedis.
-My longtime email address, alecks8981@hotmail.com, was a reference to my member number in their fan club.
-I bought all of their CD singles in order to own the B-sides.
-I convinced my dad to take me to Seattle to watch them play for my birthday.

A couple of weeks ago, I reviewed their latest Vancouver show for the Georgia Straight. Somewhere deep inside of me, my high school self went ape-shit. Below is the video for “Look Around,” which is one of the better songs from last year’s I’m with You.

Wars – “Wars 1979″

Wars
Wars totally kicked my ass back in 2011 with the hilariously heartwarming Pacey from Might Ducks, and now the Vancouver band is prepping another album. First up is the 1979 EP, which contains the upcoming album cut “Wars 1979″ (which I can only assume is a reference to Death from Above 1979). This track tones down the punk and emphasizes the pop, and it’s fucking awesome.

Mother Mother – “The Sticks”

Mother Mother
I’m on the jury for the Prism Prize, which ranks the best Canadian music videos of the past year. I can’t think of many (any?) clips better than the one for Mother Mother’s “The Sticks,” which was animated by Chad VanGaalen. Check out the unsettling, post-apocalyptic nightmare below.

Go to Exclaim! to read my interview with Mother Mother.
