Diamond Rings – “I’m Just Me”

Diamond Rings
A couple of days go I reviewed Nickelback for the Georgia Straight, which was undoubtedly one of the most absurd (yet undeniably entertaining) shows I’ve ever attended.

Here’s the exact opposite of Nickelback. It’s the latest single from Diamond Rings, “I’m Just Me.” This one is a disco-tinged pop song that may not be John O’s most memorable tune, but it’s bound to sound amazing on the dance floor. Go to Exclaim! to read my latest story about Diamond Rings.

Monomyth – “Don’t Stare”

Monomyth
I’m a huge fan of Monomyth’s self-titled tape, and here’s another of the EP’s standouts. “Don’t Stare” is a slow-builder that begins with unaccompanied guitar strumming; the vocals don’t enter until the 34-second mark, and this low-key atmosphere persists until around two minutes in, when the song suddenly explodes into its cinematic earworm of a refrain. This chorus returns a couple more times, making this a very well-spent six minutes.

Sightlines – “The New Muses”

Sightlines
Vancouver’s Sightlines are fronted by Eric Axen of Hermetic and they are putting out a tape that’s appropriately called Summer. Below is the opening track from said cassette, “The New Muses,” a song that is loud and fast enough to be a punk song, but also contains a hint of classic ’90s indie pop.

Bleach Babes – “Kaleidoscope”

Bleach Babes
Here’s the thing about Vancouver’s Bleach Babes: they really like Wavves, especially the super-lo-fi early stuff. I caught their show at Music Waste, and they even emphasized the similarity by covering a Wavves song (”To the Dregs,” if my memory serves me).

But hey, I like Wavves and enjoyed Bleach Babes’ set. After all, there’s nothing wrong with a little grimy pop punk in the summertime. Here’s “Kaleidoscope” from the band’s Losers tape.

The Courtneys – “Nu Sundae”

The Courtneys
Lord! What a week. It’s been a busy seven days, I’ve spent much of it listening to tapes on my super up-to-date new CD/cassette player from Sears.

One of my favourite new tapes in K.C. Reeves by Vancouver’s the Courtneys. Yes, it gets its title from Keanu. The excellently sludgy indie pop number “Nu Sundae” is below. It presumably get its name from fellow Vancouver group Nü Sensae.

K.C. Reeves is out on Green Burrito Records.

No Gold – “Expansiv Pac”

No Gold
Apparently Vancouver’s No Gold is an instrumental electro band now. I didn’t see that one coming, since I first heard of the trio when it was playing straight-up tropical pop.

Below, listen to “Expansiv Pac,” which is the first track off the band’s recently released EP New Recipe. It begins with some ambient noodling before turning into a brittle, noisy dance cut. Get the EP from Bandcamp.

Gold – “Lose Your Hair”

Gold
When I interviewed Matthew Swann of Extra Happy Ghost!!!/Astral Swans for Exclaim! recently, he revealed that he has also been playing in the Calgary jangle pop band Gold.

The fast yet dreamy (and altogether lovely) tune “Lose Your Hair is below.” This recorded features the late Chris Reimer of Women on drums.

Astral Swans – “Holly”

Astral Swans
Here’s a moody song called “Holly” by Astral Swans, which is the new project of Extra Happy Ghost!!!’s Matthew Swann. I included Extra Happy Ghost!!! on my ballot for the Polaris Music Prize, so obviously I’m intrigued by his latest, more electronic-leaning project.

Go to Exclaim! to read my interview with him about what he’s got going on lately.

Cold Warps – “Slimer”

Cold Warps
Today I’ve got another great garage pop band from Halifax in Cold Warps, who just put out a 7″ featuring their song “Slimer.” I have a copy, and I can only describe the colour of the vinyl as “slime,” making it one of the grossest and coolest records I own. Listen to the scuzzy and infectious tune below, and go to Exclaim! to read my recent piece about Cold Warps. Can we call this “slime pop”?

Polaris picks 2012, first ballot

Back for year two
Here we are again: it’s Polaris Music Prize voting time. This year’s pack just might be the strongest so far. Four of these albums are totally rockin’ and one is utterly depressing, but they’re all great. Without further ado, this is how my first ballot stacks up. Stay tuned for my second ballot in a few weeks

1. Handsome FursSound Kapital

In my three years as a Polaris Music Prize juror, this is my favourite album yet. Unlike any other LP in recent memory, this album gives me that same otherworldly thrill that I used to get when I was first discovered music as a teenager, and achieves what any great album should: it takes me back to the time in my life when I first heard it and helps me to make sense of where I am today. That’s some heavy, life-changing shit for an album that come out last year.

minibar2. Apollo GhostsLandmark

Landmark is a little scuzzier and more punk-influenced than what Apollo Ghosts have done before, but it’s easily as charming. It doesn’t have the conceptual element that 2010’s Mount Benson had, but the pop tunes are even better.

minibar3. PS I Love YouDeath Dreams

PS I Love You’s sophomore album is fairly consistent with 2010’s Meet Me at the Muster Station both in terms of sound and quality. The fuzz guitar and pounding drums may sound a little huger this time, but this one won me over for all the same reasons as its predecessor.

minibar4. WarsPacey from Mighty Ducks

I recently started watching Fringe, so this pop punk gem earns extra points for its Joshua Jackson-referencing title. But it’s the charming sense of humour and enduring melodies that earned this a place on my ballot.

minibar5. Extra Happy Ghost!!!Modern Horses

This Chad VanGaalen-produced collection is as sparse and bleak as any album I heard this year, but the bummed-out melodies begin to take hold after a few listens.
