We’ve got to make it rain somehow

Mo-August
By sticking up for Red Hot Chili Peppers, I feel a bit like one of those bloggers who still claims that Incubus is good. But really, when I was in high school, this band was life-changing. My life can be neatly divided into pre-Californication and post-Californication eras. It’s hard to convey just how much the Chili Peppers meant to me back when I was fifteen.

But, y’know, times change. I reviewed the newly-released I’m with You for Exclaim! and, well, you can go there to read my somewhat mixed response. But still, I have a lot of fondness for the band, which I hope comes across in the massive Timeline I wrote.

Below is the single “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie,” which is probably the closest the new album comes to matching the ultra-catchy hooks of the band’s best work.

I am what I am

I wanna meet Nathan Williams
With Wavves, it’s always the same question: lo-fi or hi-fi?

“I Wanna Meet Dave Grohl” is somewhere in between. Fuzzy and loud but not nearly as indecipherable as Nathan Williams’ early speaker-blown recordings, this song is a shit-kicker. Williams’ voice has never sounded more powerful, and his hooks are as sharp as ever.

This morning, I wrote an Exclaim! article about Wavves stirring up shit at the MTV VMAs. Awesome.

Is it too far east for me?

Stars on the tracks
I know I only just went away, but I’m headed out of town again, this time to a remote cabin with no electricity (and subsequently no Internet connection) somewhere past Pemberton, BC. I leave you with “East Van Girls,” a reverb-soaked garage rocker by local outfit Shimmering Stars. This catchy track comes from the excellent Violent Hearts LP, due out September 13 via Hardly Art.

I interviewed the band for the Georgia Straight (again). Alcohol proved to be conductive to a very good conversation. Funny dudes.

The dust blew around over me

Entomophobia
Vancouver songsmith Jordan Klassen will release Repentance on November 7. The first single is called “Go to Me,” and it’s a lovely tune that builds from a gentle ukulele-and-glockenspiel ballad to a cinematic pop rocker. Klassen’s low range sounds distinctly like Sufjan Stevens, while his high range sounds damn-near identical to the Shins‘ James Mercer (”Kissing the Lipless” anyone?). But despite the similarity to other there’s still plenty of personality in this song.

Don’t know what to do

Shoegazers
Here’s another delightfully twee offering from Seattle’s Seapony. Entitled “With You,” this lo-fi pop cut is all jangling guitars, tinny beats and poignant romance. This comes from Go with Me, released this year on Hardly Art. Go to Exclaim! to read my review.

The band filmed a performance of this song for Yours Truly.

We beat our drums

Hanging in the supply closet.
I’m back from the UK! In the past two weeks I have:

-Seen seven bands live. The only one that was tolerable was a traditional Scottish duo called Duncan Mackinnon and Jock the Box.
-Sat on a train in the London Underground across from a guy wearing a Vancouver Voodoo jacket.
-Ridden the Harry Potter train and seen Platform 9 3/4.
-Watched two different documentaries about Banksy and seen two of his pieces in person.
-Consumed an unhealthy amount of Irn-Bru.

Before I left, I interviewed 41st and Home for the Georgia Straight. Listen to the band’s catchy, orchestral “Wilderness Eyes” below.

A door that is slammed in my face.

Planet Earth: Shallow Seas
Last year, I posted a song by Aidan Knight and wrote, “It takes guts to release a song with pauses this long.”

I could say the same thing about the new We Are the City single. Entitled “Morning Song,” there’s no shortage of dead air during the twelve-second a cappella passage near to the beginning. It’s a bold move that’s well played.

This comes from the upcoming Mourning Song/Morning Song 7″. Note the “u” in the A-side.

Let’s not worry for a bit

I was gonna do a photoshoot but then I got high
Sunny Pompeii is led by Said the Whale drummer Spencer Schoening. Hear the climactic acoustic rocker “Who Knows Who Knows” below. Said the Whale fans will enjoy this if they like a dash of Fleet Foxes and the Flaming Lips in with their catchy pop rock.

This comes from the oh-so-punny EP Breakfast of Champignons, due out August 26. Go to Exclaim! to get the scoop.

On a different note, I saw this today.

Just like you were on the day you were born

Echo echo echo echo
Remember when I posted a song by the Hope Slide? Well, here’s another spinoff of the now-defunct Hinterland. Drawn Ship is a minimalist rock duo from Vancouver, and below you can hear the slinky, ominous “Glass Eye.” This one features vocal harmonies from Hannah Georgas, which is a good match, since that her voice sounds distinctly similar to frontwoman Lyn Heinemann.

The track comes from the Drawn Ship’s upcoming Low Domestic, due September 6 through Scratch. Go to Exclaim! to read my recent interview with the band.

Setting fire to the ocean

Riffing on Pollock
In recent weeks, I’ve heard some rumblings that a new Yukon Blonde album was on the way. Those rumours have been confirmed by the announcement of a new EP, Fire//Water, due out Septeber 20 via Nevado. A full-length will follow in 2012.

Here’s the kind-of title track, “Fire.” Long live vocal harmonies and the 1970s. This sounds a lot like the band’s past work, which is a good thing.

A while back I reviewed Yukon Blonde’s live show for Exclaim!, when the band opened for Plants & Animals and totally blew the headliners away.

The photo in the sidebar was taken by Alex Cairncross.
