As far as badass rock ‘n’ roll chicks go, they don’t get much badass-er than Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent). Last night I checked out her show at Venue, as was blown away by her virtuosic guitar playing and her band’s ornate five-piece arrangements. Equally gripping was Clark’s oddball stage presence, as she came out looking like a wood nymph who wandered off the set of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, slipped into a cocktail dress and began shredding the shit out of a guitar.
For a badass St. Vincent song, check out “Actor Out of Work,” the sort-of title track from last year’s Actor. A blitz of distortion and thundering drums, it falls on the jarring end of Clark’s baroque pop/noise rock spectrum. Also, head over to St. Vincent’s MySpace to watch the newly-released video for “Laughing with a Mouth of Blood.”
I interviewed Annie for this month’s issue of BeatRoute. Yeah, that’s right—we’re on first name terms now. Sup, Annie?
